During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–25), Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, made remarkable strides in transport development, building a modern, multi-dimensional network that has significantly improved connectivity, mobility, and residents' sense of well-being.

Metro network takes shape

Guiyang Metro Line 2 opened fully on April 28, 2021, marking the city's entry into a networked metro era. Line 3 began operations on Dec 16, 2023, becoming the city's longest, fastest, and most intelligent single metro line, featuring smart stations and self-service systems. On Dec 8, 2024, Line S1 was launched, creating a key link between Guiyang's urban core and Gui'an New Area, and opening a new chapter in integrated development.

Railways boost two-way connectivity

Guiyang launched China's first urban ring railway on March 30, 2022, providing fast, same-day commuting options and supporting green travel. The Guiyang–Nanning High-speed Railway fully opened on Aug 31, 2023, cutting travel time between the two cities to less than three hours and strengthening links between Guizhou and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

Public buses better serve people's needs

Guiyang has also expanded its people-centric bus services. Since June 2024, "agriculture-support bus routes" have helped farmers transport fresh produce efficiently from fields to markets.

To date, 38 such routes have carried more than 34,500 passengers and transported nearly 1,250 metric tons of agricultural products. In October 2024, a dedicated "city builders" bus line was introduced, offering flexible services for construction workers and becoming a symbol of inclusive urban mobility.

Expressways strengthen regional links

The Guiyang–Huangguoshu Expressway opened on May 31, 2022, improving access to the Yangtze River Delta. Its eastern extension, opened on March 21, 2025, has become the fastest gateway in and out of eastern Guiyang. The Guiyang–Jinsha Expressway, launched on Nov 24, 2023, shortened the driving distance by about 65 kilometers and reduced the travel time to around one hour.

Aviation expands city's horizons

Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport's T3 terminal began operations in December 2021. Designed around the principles of safety, green development, intelligence, and a more passenger-centric service, the 167,400-square-meter terminal can handle up to 30 million passenger trips annually. As Guizhou's largest aviation hub, the airport serves as the province's primary gateway to the world.
