Guiyang's journey into metro development began in 2008 when the municipal people's government approved its first urban rail transit plan. Construction of Metro Line 1 started in October 2013, and on Dec 1, 2018, the line was opened to the public.
Over the past six years, the launch of metro lines 2, 3, and S1 has expanded the metro network to 146.47 kilometers, transforming urban mobility, stimulating economic growth, and accelerating regional development.
The north-south Metro Line 3, often called Guiyang's transportation artery, has carried 74.77 million passengers in just one year.
The metro system in the bustling Huaguoyuan area of Nanming district has significantly improved transportation while boosting local commerce. Opened on May 31, 2024, Sky Square–Dolphin Square now sees an average daily foot traffic of over 100,000 people.
MixC Mall, located in the railway station business district and served by Metro Line 1, recorded 950,000 visitors and retail sales of 55 million yuan ($7.53 million) within the first three days of opening.
The metro network has also played a key role in enhancing Guiyang's commercial landscape. In 2024, the city welcomed seven new commercial complexes and specialty shopping streets, introducing 248 flagship stores and first-time brand entries.
Beyond transforming daily commutes, the metro system has fueled tourism growth. In 2024, Guiyang set new records with 34.3 million overnight visitors, 190,000 inbound tourists, and an average tourist expenditure of 1,326 yuan.
