Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has been implementing a transit-oriented development (TOD) model in an effort to become a city with excellent ecology, low-carbon transportation and convenient travel.

Li Yongqian, chief engineer of the Guiyang Public Security and Traffic Management Bureau, said that Guiyang is a mountainous city that must rely on efficient land use and development because of the scarcity of resources, thus the importance of TOD in the city.

In 2014, Guiyang Urban Rail Transit Co commissioned the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design to carry out comprehensive development planning research along metro lines 1 and 2 and carried out TOD at Qingshuijiang Road and Douguan stations according to the research results.

The LifeOne project, the first planned TOD project in Guiyang, covers an area of 38,900 square meters and encompasses residential areas, commercial areas, hotels and apartments. The project is naturally divided into two plots from the extension of Pujiang Road. The two plots are connected by the station hall of metro line 1, and residents can enter the internal passage of the community through the station.

Liu Jie, deputy general manager of Guiyang Public Transport Investment and Operation Group Co, said that after the development of other surrounding plots of the TOD project, the entire area will include residential, commercial, office, cultural, sports facilities and ecological parks, and public transport in the area will be greatly improved.

To enhance the influence of the TOD on the economy and society in Guiyang, the Guiyang Transportation Committee has carried out Guiyang TOD strategic research and planned several TOD projects since 2020, and led the establishment of the Guiyang TOD big data monitoring and evaluation platform.

According to Su Junjie, an official of the committee, the platform mainly provides land use analysis and visualization that integrates big data, provides quantitative urban land use rationality indicators, and can analyze public transportation coverage and operational efficiency.

Next, Guiyang will optimize urban development led by public transportation and the comprehensive utilization of urban space through the TOD model.
