Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has made progress in alleviating traffic congestion since it began efforts in October.

Through its big data traffic flow platform, combined with traffic police survey and public opinions, Guiyang has identified 32 major traffic congestion sites, including the crossroad in Guanshanhu district's Guanshanhu Financial Town.

According to Zhang Bin, director of the Guiyang Public Security and Traffic Administration, rush hours at the intersection ended about 20 to 30 minutes earlier after optimizing the signal light cycle, adjusting the entrances and exits of nearby parking lots, and opening the parking lots of nearby communities.

Traffic data from Oct 25 to Dec 29 on Baidu Map, a major Chinese navigation app, showed that during the period, Guiyang's traffic congestion index ranking dropped from third place to the 12th place after optimization.

The average congestion index in Guiyang on working days was 1.33, a decrease of 9.8 percent year-on-year, with the average speed of vehicles increasing 6.4 percent year-on-year.
